Last year when I was pregnant, CT3 and I made a decision not to worry about anything major with the kids rooms til we felt like it or until the need presented itself. This meant everyone would stay put and the new baby would sleep in a pack-n-play.
Well, four months in, Anne Margaret is still in her crib and baby brother is in a swing in our room and has been napping some in the pack-n-play.
Its not that I wasn't excited about making a big girl room for Anne Margaret and creating the perfect baby boy nursery, its just that the timing wasn't right for us. She wasn't climbing out of her crib and she loves her room. She sleeps great at night and we knew we would have enough transition between potty training, taking away the paci and a new baby, so we figured as long as she was happy, we would keep that consistent.
I was also really sick with the whole pregnancy and the thought of cleaning, redecorating, sorting and moving stuff just wasn't appealing. I normally love the idea of redecorating and rearranging and it just sounded miserable. I was focused on keeping food down, gaining weight and staying out of the hospital. We also needed and wanted the guest room {which will become AM's big girl room} for guests for a bit longer - through the birth of the new baby and we wanted it through Christmas so that also deterred us from any major changes.
While I was a bit bummed that I didn't have a super cute new nursery for my baby boy to come home to, I just had to not worry about it. I had to realize that AM was happy where she was and that CT4 wouldn't know or care whether he slept in a pack-n-play or a fancy, perfect baby blue boy nursery. Instead of me trying to force it all, we just didn't do a darn thing and it has worked out fine.
I did have a slight panic attack about money through all of this - knowing that once I quit my job, we wouldn't be able to spend as I would probably want to, so that was one decision that CT3 and I did make. We set a budget and I picked out the bedding and decor for both kids rooms and ordered it all while I was still working. All of Anne Margaret's was shipped here {see yesterday's post for a few pictures} and all of CT4's was shipped to my parents house.
His was shipped there because the theme of his room is a surprise from Daddy CT! CT3 said that I could go all "Extreme Makeover" on him and redecorate the room and him not have a clue what I am doing. That said, everything for it went to Atlanta and Mom, Dad and Kristin are helping me with a few decor items. The room will be PERFECT for a little boy to grow into and knowing that we have all of the stuff for both rooms purchased I think made it easier to not worry about not having anything actually done.
Honestly, if we have a third child {in a long, long, long time from now!!!} I wont stress over room or space. I will make sure the swing and pack n play are ready and then worry about the rest of it later! This train of thought and laid back attitude really has been enlightening for me!!
SO, now that CT4 is almost 4 months old, and now that we are a bit slower during the weeks, we are starting to chat about transitioning. We still need to order Anne Margaret's big girl bed and we will probably do that in the next few weeks.
I am honestly really glad we waited. To now have the stuff and not to have to worry about money for it is great. To feel good and want to redecorate and clean out is wonderful {without having to think of throwing up or the big ole belly!} and I think it will make all of this a fun process.
Anne Margaret lately has been asking to sleep in our bed - just because she likes big beds and tonight she was asking if she could sleep in the guest room in the big bed there. I asked if she wanted a big bed for her own and she nodded enthusiastically and said that "then baby brother could have her crib" as she pointed to her room.
We are getting close and I am happy. Hopefully in a month or two, I will have two newly decorated, cute kids rooms! Cant wait to show and share them with you - and reveal the theme of CT4's nursery!

Lauren, I have been peeking at your blog a bit after coming over from Kendra's. I found this post really refreshing and full of wisdom. I think it is a sweet tradition to decorate for a new baby, but the baby certainly won't know the difference, and finances/living space/time/etc. don't always allow for it. We have a room designated for our 8 month old, but he's actually been in a pack n play in the living room (next to our room) because we haven't wanted to get a monitor and put him in a room farther away!
