Remembering

You know how sometimes a song or a smell will be the gentle reminder of days past?

Like the song, "My Deliverer" by Rich Mullins reminds me of the 21 days I spent in Kenya; "Seventeen" by Tim McGraw reminds me of a soccer tournament that was played in Columbus, GA; or "Ants Marching" by Dave Matthews Band reminds me of the days Mom spent driving me a few times a week to Fayetteville for soccer practice; anything by Shane and Shane remind me of the youth trip I chaperoned to Beaver Creek, CO; "He Is Exalted" by Shane and Shane make me think of my wedding day; "My Redeemer Lives" makes me think of the Assembly of God church that I went to some in college; "Blessed Be Your Name" by Matt Redman and "In Christ Alone" remind me of the Ranch; and "Everlasting" by Hillsong now reminds me of my sweet Anne Margaret who asks me to sing that to her every night at bed time.

My Grandpa always smelled kind of pepperminty and Mom and Dad's house always has a familiar scent. I could go on and on with memories and the things and senses that prompted them.

Well, the other day, I picked up an old recipe card. It was written by my Granny {Mom's mom} who passed away a while back. Her handwriting is quite familiar to me....as is her voice with the lady like, southern but Virginian twang. She called me what sounded like "Law-run" with an emphasis on the "run."

Grandma's handwriting is quite distinctive too and we still often receive notes from her and as soon as I see the cursive, I know who its from.

All of these thoughts got me thinking about memories, songs, senses, preservation and modern technology. Like will my kids in 40 years have anything with my handwriting on it? Or will I have just always emailed them? Will all of their documents and memories from their mom be virtual or will they have something tangible? Maybe they will just grab my computer, bury it in a time capsule and call the days of their ole mom as preserved!

I know I am kind of rambling here but all of these random thoughts basically leading me to the thing that I found - which was pretty cool....and which I now want to do for all of my family - and after CT3 saw it, he wants to do it for his family too!

Fast forward to last weekend when we were in Atlanta. I printed out a random sheet of paper from www.myscriptfont.com and had my Mom and Dad fill it out as indicated. I brought it home, scanned it in and in less than 5 seconds I had created "The Marge" and "The Daley" - true type fonts {.ttf} out of my parents handwriting!

From there, I just right clicked on the file, downloaded it and then double clicked it to get it installed on my computer. The entire process took MAYBE 10  minutes - including the scan in and waiting on email.

After that, I opened up a file {I used Photoshop as it was already opened} and drafted a silly note and then copied it twice. One I changed to The Marge and one I changed to The Daley and voila! Notes in my parents handwriting!!

Now, I may go back and have Mom and Dad re-write their letters as some of the spacing is a bit weird and that has to do with how we wrote it in the squares {I think the instructions say to fill the square}. Anyway, I love it and as for how close it is to their own handwriting, well, I will let them be the judge of that!

Pin It Now!

  1. Very cool! Definitely want to try that out :) I keep all the handwritten stuff I have from people - cards, notes, letters etc. I never really thought about it, but now that you mention, I rarely ever write anything that I keep. It all goes on the computer, my phone, or in snail mail to someone else. Crazy.

  2. That's great!! I recently started handwriting things at work-- my coworkers think I'm crazy but I'm having all sorts of fun re-learning my script...
