Today is my old mans birthday!
Happy Birthday Daley!
Its been a wild past year and a half, but we are thankful for each day.
Just to update you on where Dad has been and where he is now, here is the recap.
January 21, 2012 - Mom and Dad call me and tell me Dad has gotten abnormal results on his colonoscopy. Surgery was inevitable and would be done soon. We were waiting on biopsies, MRI's and lab results back to see if it was cancerous.
January 28, 2012 - Dad's Birthday and everyone was with us to celebrate and go out to dinner. We also just found out that it was colon cancer but his MRI came back okay and lab numbers were okay. We were scheduling more tests and waiting on surgery date to be set.
February 18, 2012 - Dad had a 9.5 hour colon resection to remove the cancerous mass. He was in the hospital for a few days while I was out west trying to enjoy a ski trip.
February 23, 2012 - We got home and spent a day with Dad, before on the 24th, he had a severe infection and we spent all night with him in the ER.
February 25, 2012 - Dad was home and the road to healing and recovery began. Thankfully everything was caught early and the surgery went well and he has a great prognosis.
Where is he now?
For the colon stuff, he recently had all of his annual stuff done and more lab work done. Test results all came back looking great. He was told to come back in a year - which to me is great news! Many of you know that he has also had some crazy eye issues in the past and for a time was basically blind {torn retinas, a hemorrhage in the other eye, etc}. Well after too many to count injections in the eye, a few surgeries and a LONG time of healing {like three years!} the eye doctor has given him a great report!! He said his eyes just keep getting better and Dad can read "more lines on the chart!"
I remember the day that I sat praying that the Lord "would heal Dad's eyes so that he could see my babies." I am thankful not only that he can see them but his eyes are well and getting better everyday. The Lord sure works in mysterious ways and while none of this happened overnight, none of us lost hope and Dad just kept his head up and kept plugging away.
We are so thankful for my Dad and for his happy heart and positive attitude! To celebrate, Mom got herself a new car and I gave my Dad a vegetable chopper so he could chop Mom's veggies. Mom said that "this was a great birthday for Dad and if she racked up this well on his, she couldn't wait for her own!"
Love you Daddio and here's to many more Carvel cakes and birthday celebrations!
{Dad shared his story about the colon cancer beginning here. It ran for eight days in a row, so make sure to start at the beginning and go through them!}

Thanks for the shout out kid! I am more than happy to be here to harass you and your sister for many, many more years. You forgot to mention that I have managed to lose 35+ pounds with this adventure. Needless to say, I would not suggest that colon cancer and surgery is a great diet plan. Go the conventional route--eat less, eat better foods and move that body everyday--rain or shine! And, keep a smile on your face--inside and out!
ReplyDeleteI cannot believe it has already been a year. Happy Birthday, Mr. Dale!!
